You race through the dark dense forest, clinging to the reins of a stolen mare. By a crimson moon's light, each unfamiliar tree appears just as familiar as the next. And the path ahead is quickly turning to naught. For each hoof hitting the ground, your pulse quickens to match. Then, a blood-curdling scream pierces the night. It comes from behind, from above, but you do not turn your gaze. '//Of a deer or a fox, it must be//,' you whisper under your breath; you have heard creatures have in them to sound as maidens in fright. But, surely, this deep in an endless forest, there was only you with the beat of a human heart. [[Swallowing your overflowing terror, you tremble yet hold your tongue from crying out. |mareBuckles][$criesV = true]] [[ You stay firm and tighten your grip on the reigns. Courage found you in precisely moments such as these. |mareBuckles]]

Then—the mare buckles, straining. And you pull. Yet more so, does she. The frayed leather rips from your hands. You see yourself lifted above the bolting horse, then—in horror—falling far below. In one delayed moment, you reach towards the trees and sky above to grasp. But they do not save you. Then the air in your lungs leaves you with a harsh meeting of the uneven forest ground. And not even your scream, it seems, is permitted to join the creatures of the night. For the next moments your breaths struggle, harshly withheld from you. And how cruel it all is; despite being turned away from the heavens, you see stars behind your eyes. When the worst pain has passed, you do find air again. And you take great pains in retaking the breaths you had lost, coughing and gasping into the silent night. You— No horse. No satchel. Nothing. //All, gone...// It is all gone. The ground has a searching cold, and soon that cold will turn to bitter ice. You have to stand. Even now, you still have your life. The blood flowing through your veins in an unrivalled pace makes that clear. You may yet survive. Shelter— Then water— Then food. <<if ($cries)>> That is how you will survive, you tell yourself, as you wipe away a tear rolling down your stained cheek. <<else>> That is how you will survive, you tell yourself, clenching your teeth in stubborn stirring grit. <</if>> The only road ahead is the one the moon offers, and so, you walk it. Through the opening of the forest into a clearing, a structure much like the shadow of a mountain stands. One tall spire stretches far above the rest of this sharp silhouette. Safety. And yet…. A terror takes hold of your heart. At this sight of the unknown, your fear is so strong that you wonder if the fatal end of this cold is not simply a choice, but the better fate. The sage saying, //be careful what you wish for//, has perhaps never been so apt. But. It is simply a castle… Yet… you never knew there was a castle in these woods. Would you not have known? Have heard? You head towards it, despite this suspicion. Despite stalling feet. Despite nagging fears—you favour your mind, which ultimately sees sanctuary. Imagine… The warmth from a fire. Food—little would it matter what. Water to quench what feels like an unending thirst. Your shape was strong and able, but it bore the wear and tear of these horrible days. Wounded, bruised, and now near beaten. You pushed. Oh, how you roused for further strength. But… <<include "youFeltItHeavyNow">>

With each step, despite the darkness, further details of the castle are unveiled. Illuminated by the bloodied moon, the spire, which towers high above you, was only one of many. Each peak stretches towards the heavens yet never reaches its grace. A dark stone covers the battlements. The timber logs of the open drawbridge groan with your weight. And the gate—which creaks high by your bare hand—opens to a derelict and deserted courtyard. It is here a deafening quiet. And you do not move. The only sound is your heart pounding in your ears; [[from fear. |fromFear][$fearful = true]] [[from fatigue. |fromFatigue]]

It is as if, without proof or knowledge, the surrounding shadows are adorned with untold ravenous eyes, pricking your skin with their sharp stares. You feel a sense of childlike haste for the safety of one's home. For the bed and the covers above your eyes. You run towards the wide entry of the castle. With shaking hands, you reach for the latch and tear it open, unwilling to face the unknown a second longer—you press for the next. <<include "theDoorOpens">>

You might not stand for much further. The damage from a long journey, hard fall, and harder life seem to have finally brought you to your knees. //'Not yet'//, you repeat to no one but yourself. The steps to the wide entry of the castle are chilling. Your hands shake despite yourself, from exhaustion, from the cold. Ignoring the hairs on your neck and the chill in your spine as signs of fever. You reach for the latch and tear it open, unwilling and unable to face the wind a second longer. <<include "theDoorOpens">>

The door floats open—a much lighter touch than it has any reason for. Yet you do little to heed such warnings once you observe an //octet// of lit torches lining the hall on parallel pillars that stretches floor to high ceiling. You are not alone. This, you know. But you do not know if that is what you wished for or what you feared. But another alive soul is in here. Keeping the light in a great hall on a night such as this. [["Pray, who is here?" You put an ungloved finger to your lips, then taste your tongue to your mouth—dry to the touch. And your judgement fairs no better; the amount of clarity of mind you posses not far from fever. The shadows flicker in the torchlight, dancing along the walls as if the very stone is alive and breathing. But dancing fire creates little warmth. You may no longer be in biting temperatures, but your bones remain cold from its rough touch. You entered safety, you thought. But you are not saved. [[Next page|theChamberAtTheEnd]]

The chamber at the end of the first room is smaller but much like the first. Dark brick, an odour of burning from the flames, and countless archways and columns. In approaching one such structure there is, at the centre of each, an engraving. A crest of the biblical beast. Known to you from the paintings and passages in the church— 'The dragon stood on the shore of the sea. And I saw a beast coming out of the sea. It had //seven// heads, and on each head a blasphemous name.' Yet... this one, your finger traces the mark, has only //six// monstrous mouths. One apart from the godly number. One step from perfection and more towards the abyss. A shiver racks your body, this time heavier than the last. Down you travel, you have to. Following endless pillars. And more they are. Evermore. Until you no longer can stand walking, and lean onto the rough-touch stone. Oh, how you wish for food and warmth. You wish to sit and rest! A warm greeting is granted by //four// roaring hearths on every side of the room. On the table is a polished candelabra with a //trio// of lights. A //pair// of adjoining banquet chairs. As you swallow, as you feel such sweetness dripping down your needy tongue—a once-still shadow in the corner of your eye moves; not from any fire. But real corporal flesh, previously hidden. Of violent speed, it steps forward as if by your bite commanded, and is revealed by the light, to be a $roGender. The most striking of $v_men. <<print $v_his.toUpperFirst()>> tall frame is draped in midnight and scarlet finery, in shades of this very night's sky above. Skin pale as snow. Elegant air and alluring draw. Long locks of black cascade across $v_hi cheeks, framing dark eyes so shadowed and cold, it may numb your soul for eternity. You can not look away. As if you are compelled to gaze at $v_him. As if held captive by the most beguiling terror. You are the deer in the frozen moment of near capture. The flames crackle and roar, and hints of sugar still linger on your lips. “Is it sweet?” $v_he asks, wearing a tender smile that never reaches eyes of a striking reddened brown. <<print $v_he.toUpperFirst()>> gestures to a large bowl which holds an abundance of the ripest apples.
